The gym. A world of its own.

Hello, my name is Courtney and I'm addicted to the gym.  Well, sort of anyways.  I am not an outdoor workout person.  Running outside hurts my entire body.  I prefer my nice temperature controlled, daycare providing, clean towel offering, music video showing gym.  Wow, I'm spoiled!  Here are a few of my must and must not's for the gym (with a few pet peeves).

Dress appropriately-I usually work out in comfortable tight but still flexible pants and a top that is long enough to not ride up and loose enough to not feel sucked in.  Sports bras and comfortable/supportive underwear are a must.  We've all seen the people at the gym with their parts flopping, bouncing and jiggling all over the place!  Or even worse, popping out from under too short shorts and tops.  I'm glad you're here.  I love that you're working out.  Please don't make me look at that!

Wear good shoes-This does not mean expensive.  Find the brand that fits you best.  Everyone has different arches and support issues.  Under Armour is my preferred brand of shoe.  It is lightweight and fits my arches perfectly.  They also breath well.  Your flip flops, loafers, and old worn down sneakers are going to lead to some sore feet.

Have a plan-You are more likely to have a successful workout if you go in with a plan.  Decide how much time you will spend there, what machines you will use and in what order, the resistance you will set those machines to, the reps and sets you will do, etc.  Having a plan will keep you from wasting time and being one of those people that seems to just wander around instead of work.  Be sure to adjust your plan to challenge yourself.

Challenge yourself-Make the most of your time there.  Walking on the treadmill while you text on your phone is not going to get you very far.  Remember why you are there and what your goals are.

Find what motivates you-Mine is music.  My i-pod is a must.  When its battery dies, my workout suffers.  Some people love cardio cinema rooms.  Find what works for you.

Ask a trainer-It is much better to ask a trainer how to use a machine that is new to you than to just wing it.  You could really hurt yourself.

Happy workouts!
