Stretch yourself in the right direction.

A week of allowing myself to splurge a little and I'm feeling pretty great.  This has been a challenge and I'm relieved its almost over.  I was trying to decide what to focus on for next week.  I will be out of town with my little one for most of the week so, something simple would be best.  One of the things I'm not very good about is stretching after my home workouts.  I plan on bringing my mat and free weights with me so, that is going to be my goal.  5 minutes of stretching can sometimes be the difference between being sore the next day or being a just a little bit of discomfort.  Stretching also increases flexibility and helps reduce your chance of injury.  Everyone should stretch after a workout.

Bake me a cake.

I love to bake.  When things get crazy, I head to the kitchen and preheat the oven to 350.  Some people drink a glass of wine or watch TV.  Not this lady.  I envy food bloggers that create their own recipes, take beautiful pictures and bake something new almost every day.  Did I miss my calling in life?  Doubtful.  When looking at recipes, the first thing I look for is the amount of butter, shortening or oil called for.  I just cannot bake with a cup of butter or 1/2 cup of oil.  Shortening is out all the way for me.  I prefer to get my high fat baked goods from local bakeries.  Then, I can pretend there isn't all of that fat in my cute little cupcake.  My newest obsession are the cake mixes from Trader Joe's.  The yellow cake mix is the best I've ever tasted.  I baked with the chocolate version today.  I'll let you know how it turned out.  There's nothing like a mouth full of chocolate cake to melt away the stress of the week.  Just make sure its worth the splurge!

The gym. A world of its own.

Hello, my name is Courtney and I'm addicted to the gym.  Well, sort of anyways.  I am not an outdoor workout person.  Running outside hurts my entire body.  I prefer my nice temperature controlled, daycare providing, clean towel offering, music video showing gym.  Wow, I'm spoiled!  Here are a few of my must and must not's for the gym (with a few pet peeves).

Dress appropriately-I usually work out in comfortable tight but still flexible pants and a top that is long enough to not ride up and loose enough to not feel sucked in.  Sports bras and comfortable/supportive underwear are a must.  We've all seen the people at the gym with their parts flopping, bouncing and jiggling all over the place!  Or even worse, popping out from under too short shorts and tops.  I'm glad you're here.  I love that you're working out.  Please don't make me look at that!

Wear good shoes-This does not mean expensive.  Find the brand that fits you best.  Everyone has different arches and support issues.  Under Armour is my preferred brand of shoe.  It is lightweight and fits my arches perfectly.  They also breath well.  Your flip flops, loafers, and old worn down sneakers are going to lead to some sore feet.

Have a plan-You are more likely to have a successful workout if you go in with a plan.  Decide how much time you will spend there, what machines you will use and in what order, the resistance you will set those machines to, the reps and sets you will do, etc.  Having a plan will keep you from wasting time and being one of those people that seems to just wander around instead of work.  Be sure to adjust your plan to challenge yourself.

Challenge yourself-Make the most of your time there.  Walking on the treadmill while you text on your phone is not going to get you very far.  Remember why you are there and what your goals are.

Find what motivates you-Mine is music.  My i-pod is a must.  When its battery dies, my workout suffers.  Some people love cardio cinema rooms.  Find what works for you.

Ask a trainer-It is much better to ask a trainer how to use a machine that is new to you than to just wing it.  You could really hurt yourself.

Happy workouts!

Trying your best when you're at your worst.

This week is a little crazy for me.  Between house hunting, our anniversary, tickets to Cirque Du Soleil (my present to him), and lots of other little things, I'm just ready for this week to be over.  I'm not sleeping.  It is so hard to stay motivated to workout when you're not well rested.  Getting enough sleep is always #1 on my list when staying motivated.  When you don't get enough sleep, your body craves fuel to keep you going so, you tend to eat more, rely on caffeine or just drag through your day.  Today, I'm dragging.  Here's hoping I can make it through the end of the week.  Stress just does me in every time.

The wife side of me.

It is my 3 Year Anniversary today.  Here is what I remember from my wedding day.  I woke up alone because my husband stayed the night at his groomsman's house.  Every bone in my body was filled with excitement.  No cold feet here!  My morning started with a 5 mile run outside.  I still find it hard to believe I used to run outside on a regular basis.  My wedding wasn't until the evening so, I spent my day getting ready.  Hair appointment, Make-up, Photographer and getting dressed.  I loved my wedding day.  One of the moments I remember most is standing at the end of the isle, with my Dad by my side, and just pausing.  At that moment, I knew I was making a huge and perfect decision.  My husband is the most amazing man I have ever met.  I love, respect and appreciate him more and more every day.  It just doesn't get any better than this.

He is the reason I get to stay home and raise our toddler.  He is the reason I started working out on a regular basis.  I cannot imagine where I would be without him.  The support he gives me is part of the reason I am able to do all of the things I want.  This last three years has been filled with deployments and traveling, fertility treatment, pregnancy, learning how to be parents, renovating our home, and lots of the crazy things that life has thrown our way.  In the end, we make it through together.  Happy Anniversary, Mine.

Squash for stress

My stress level is through the roof!  I'm not sleeping, seeking comfort from food and pretty much going nuts.  Buying a new home is a huge process....that is making me feel sick to my stomach.  One of the big things I crave when I'm stressed is roasted veggies.  I picked up an acorn squash over the weekend.  I'll be roasting it tonight with some cinnamon until its nice and soft.  Winter squash used to intimidate me, but now I love it.  It can be sweet or savory.  I made a pasta dish with pumpkin, ground chicken, and parmesean the other night that was pretty yummy.  Baby boy thought it was amazing.  He hasn't been that quiet during dinner for a very long time.

Sunday is for Football and planning.

I would love to be able to say that I finished out week 6 with a bang.  Instead, I feel back on an old bad habit and snacked away last night.  Have you tried the special K popcorn chips?  YUM!  There are certain things I have a weakness for when it comes to late night munching.
1-honey roasted peanuts
2-vanilla cupcake graham goldfish
3-mini vanilla wafers
4-special K popcorn chips (apparently)
5-york peppermint patty drops

I try to only buy these things occasionally because I know my willpower is only so strong.  We are in the process of house hunting/buying and it is starting to get very stressful.  I'm praying I can find a way to manage my stress in a productive way.  Maybe its about time I start reading again.  I can get lost in a book for hours and read a lot before I got pregnant.  I miss it, but rarely prioritize reading.  I'm going to try a new trick.  When I want to snack because I'm tired, stressed or possibly even hungry, I'll read a chapter (or a few pages depending if my little guy is awake).  Once the chapter is over, I can decide to have a snack or read a little more.  I've been trying to read Firefly Lane for a while now.

The last day. Now what?

I was struggling with my workout today.  My body is exhausted mostly from stress and pushing myself so hard.  I'm proud of my accomplishments these last 6 weeks.  My weigh in this morning was great.  My abs are coming along.  My leg muscles are more defined and much stronger.  My upper body is still a lot leaner than I would like.  It has changed, but not as quickly as the other parts of my body.  I have a very hard time trying to build upper body strength because of a shoulder injury.  I need surgery, but am putting it off as long as possible.  I need to be able to pick up my child and cannot do that after surgery for 3-6 months.

Well, my six weeks is over.  Now what?!  I'm hoping this blog takes on a life of its own with more healthy cooking, workout tips, gym do's and do not's, and some fun stuff too.  I'm taking the next two weeks to stick to my basic plan, but relax a little bit.  My anniversary is next week, there are lots of parties and events going on.  I'm looking forward to splurging in moderation without guilt.  Then, I'll probably buckle down for a two or three weeks.  Yes, I'm a little obsessed and love the challenge.  The reward is worth the fight.

Stress is a reaction. Learn to recognize it and manage it effectively.

Stress makes me want to workout.  When I can't workout, it makes me want to eat.  Eat everything.  I was dying for a cupcake today.  Its a good thing these two babies were here to keep me busy.  I'm going to try roasting my own pumpkin and making my own puree this weekend.  I love to add it to my oatmeal, muffins, desserts, etc.  They also look pretty on my table with my centerpiece before I bake them.

Eat and enjoy but eat for health not happiness.

I'm nearing the end of my 6 weeks.  I planned it perfectly because my anniversary is next week and I plan on indulging without guilt.  I'm having dinner out tonight with the family.  Its always hard to eat out and stay on your diet.  I'll be bringing my own dressing and avoiding the corn muffins and rolls.  Having a 17 month old to entertain always helps keep me distracted from the calorie and fat bombs.

Find comfort in the image in the mirror not the food on your plate.

This cool weather makes me want comfort food.  Butternut squash soup, pumpkin or apple anything!  I'm loving what I see in the mirror lately.  My tummy is looking much more toned, my leg muscles are getting bigger big time.  Big enough that most of my jeans don't fit in the legs, but are too big in the waist.  Tight and toned.  Here we go!

If it was easy, everyone would do it. Hang in there!

I had to skip my second abs/arms workout yesterday.  I was really not feeling well.  My cardio today resulted in an exhausted and extremely sweaty mess of a woman.  It was great, but hard.  My weigh-ins have been great this week.  I'm hoping to keep healthy for the rest of the week so, I can finish out with a bang!

Hydrate....cold water naturally burns more calories

I'm struggling today.  I don't feel well at all and couldn't finish my first abs workout.  Hopefully, this oatmeal and huge cold bottle of water will help.  I drink about 4 Liters of water a day.  Yes, that's a ton of water, but it keeps me hydrated and helps to fill me up.

Final week......how about some yoga?

I was busy yesterday and didn't get a chance to post.  I did stick to my diet and workout schedule.  Instead of my usual apple and toast I had some kettle korn from the wine festival.  No wine for me, but I still had a great time.  Spinning this morning was rough.  My body is still sore, but I'm slowly adjusting.  I can't believe its the first day of week 6 already.  Home stretch and I need to stretch more!  I'm thinking of trying yoga...hmmmm.

If you're sore, you actually worked something!

My husband took me out for a date night last night.  While I didn't stay strict on myself, I didn't over do it either.  I was VERY sore yesterday, but today is much better.  I'm anxious to post a picture on Sunday and compare it to my first photo.  Pictures are the best way for me to see my results.

My traner is kicking my butt and its only day 2!

I wish I could post my workouts here for you because they are really pushing me.  My legs are sore today in the best way.  I'm struggling through my arms/abs workouts too.  I feel stronger and weaker all at the same time.  I'm trying out a farmer's market tonight.  I hope I can find a sugar pumpkin to roast.  Pumpkin oatmeal has been my love lately.  Yum!

Its abtastic

I tried to take a picture of my abs today because they are starting to look much more defined.  The extra intervals are starting to pay off already.  This week is about adjusting from a crash diet to an every day diet.  The more I think about it, the more I realize I'm going to use this plan over and over again.  Next time, I'll stick to one or two weeks depending on how much I want to lose/tone.  I no longer eat my child's leftovers, I'm more conscious of what I'm eating instead of mindlessly stuffing my face and I've stepped up my workouts to the next level.  I'm excited to meet with a trainer tomorrow to get even more insight and direction.  I feel great today.  I feel thin, healthy and happy.

Is it a diet or a lifestyle?

Lesson in dieting: I suck at it!  I'm thinking about what kind of lifestyle I want to live when it goes to my workouts and eating habits.  I have an appointment with a personal trainer that I know and respect next week too.  Best news of the day: I can see my abs again.  Hello 4 pack!  lol!

Positive change for positive results

I'm forgetting yesterday and moving on with today.  That's the positive side of health and fitness goals, it is an ongoing process.  You can always lose the weight.  You can also always gain it.  You can build muscle and endurance or you can lose it.  The choice is yours to make.
After a far too easy workout on Tuesday, I decided it was time to take my cardio up a notch.  I had three options: 1) increase my resistance, 2) do longer speed intervals, or 3) do more frequent intervals.  I decided on a mix between 1 and 3.  For my elliptical workout, I doubled up on my intervals.  Instead of a one minute sprint every 5 min, I did two one minute sprints every five min.  1st min-backwards, 2nd min-forwards moderate intensity, 3rd min-forwards high intensity, 4th min-forwards moderate intensity, and 5th min-forwards high intensity.  I did this 7 times for a total of 45min.  My heart rate was soaring, I was sweating like a beast and I had a great workout.  For my crossramp workout, I increased my resistance from 12 to 13 and did my usual.  Ouch.  Needless to say my legs were done.  This was long over due and I made it through.  I struggled and fought, but I did it.

I have also changed up my eating schedule a little.  After my carb overload yesterday, I decided I needed to tweak things.  I wasn't getting to eat my oatmeal until 5 some days because I'm subject to the baby's schedule.  I was going straight from a big bowl of oatmeal to dinner.  Here's the new plan:

Don't be your own worst enemy.

I bought a loaf of cinnamon bread today.  I ate half the loaf already.  Yes, it was amazing, made with no preservatives, whole wheat flour and all natural ingredients.  No, it was not low calorie or part of my diet plan.  Week four is turning out to be a lot harder than I thought.  My willpower does not exist.  I'm already contemplating eating the other half.  Maybe three weeks is my limit and I should give myself a week off and restart.  I have to do something because this just isn't working!

Finding Motivation

The baby is still sick and I'm starting to not feel too well either.  I would like to say that I pulled it back together yesterday, but I ended up snacking on 6 almonds after dinner and two small york peppermint patties before bed.  I just can't get it together.  My Mom is in town for a few days and watched the little one so I could get to the gym.  It was not my best workout and I was completely distracted with thoughts of my sick guy back home, but I went.  Today I'm reminding myself why I'm doing this 6 week challenge and getting focused on my goals.  Its time to get serious!

Week 4 and we're going in reverse.

I have a sick baby at home so, here's the short story.  I'm frustrated.  I'm steadily gaining again.  Probably from under eating.  I have had a crazy craving for a huge blueberry muffin the last 3 days.  I indulged in 1/2 a reasonably sized one (shared with my sick baby of course).  I need to get back on track.  Time to get week 4 back in line.

We don't quit. Its just not who we are.

I'm happy I had those two days where I met my 'new shirt' goal because it hasn't happened since.  I'm sticking to the plan, but seeing opposite results.  Little set backs make it very hard to stay on track.  I was hoping for a great weigh in this morning.  We went to the MD state fair last night.  I've never seen so much fried food in my life!  Fried buckeyes, pb&j sandwiches, kool-aid, and the list goes on.  Yuck!  While I did not eat anything, I did walk and hold my son for the better part of an hour.  Sore feet and legs made for an extra challenging spin class this morning.  If this is a test, I'm stronger than that.

A smart indulgence or maybe not

I made the mistake of having a 100 Cal bag of microwave popcorn last night.  I woke up this morning feeling bloated and disgusting.  I should have known better.  Even at just 100 Calories the popcorn isn't healthy!  Most microwave popcorn is full of sodium and tons of artificial ingredients.  I really wish I could tolerate sodium better.  Its like a hangover after a night of drinking.  Why do I do this to myself?!  Detoxing today and hopefully starting off tomorrow feeling much better.
